Professional Musician...?

Folks probably wonder how much money you can make off of 10k plays on Spotify! The answer is about $40. Musicians are not getting rich of off streaming, that’s for sure.

In fact, about the only way anybody gets paid nowadays is through performing. But it’s so expensive if you have a live band, sound, lighting, etc. paying for a good show, good band musicians, all of that comes out of the artists pocket. I’m lucky enough to have a job that can support my art and my creative endeavors. But I know so many artists who are struggling. That’s part of why I’m writing these posts. I hope that when all is said and done, and Space Cowgirl is being distributed worldwide and played on the radio, folks will be able to look back at these posts and see that I did it myself. They can see a potential path forward for themselves if they want to be a professional musician as well.

One fun fact is that at the time of this writing, I have had in my life very limited musical instruction. I wrote my first song at age 10, at the YMCA. I have never taking a songwriting course or formally learned how to write a song. I’ve had about 8 vocal lessons in my entire life. I am working to take more, and am also beginning to learn to play bass from my bassist Jason. But so far, I’ve written and demoed every track on my album, with just my spirit to guide me.

Looking forward to the next post. In the meantime, question: what steps do you take in your life to develop your skills and talents?
